The Lichtenberger® Method

The Lichtenberger® Method was developed in the early 1980s by singer and voice teacher Gisela Rohmert in collaboration with ergonomics professor Dr. Walter Rohmert at the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany. Their work combined artistic experience with scientific research, giving rise to an innovative approach to voice training based on acoustics, perception, and healthy vocal function.

The founders observed that we are born with a naturally efficient and expressive voice. Newborn babies can cry for hours without becoming hoarse. Their voices are clear, strong, and powerful, despite the small size of their bodies. The potential for free and effortless vocal expression is already present within us.

Some people seem to maintain this instinctive relationship with the voice throughout their lives. These so-called “natural singers” often sing with ease and require little technical instruction. For many others, however, singing can become associated with effort, tension, discomfort, or the belief that they simply do not possess the talent to sing.

The Lichtenberger® Method was developed to make singing accessible to everyone who wishes to explore their voice. It offers a path for those who experience vocal fatigue, struggle with projection, or feel they lack the abilities that come so easily to others.

Singing Is a Birthright

Too many people abandon singing because they believe they are not talented enough, when in reality they may simply need a different approach.

"Singing belongs to us, to everyone who has a voice."

Singing does not belong to a gifted few. It is a natural human capacity and a form of expression available to anyone with a voice.

Many difficulties with pitch, coordination, and vocal freedom can improve when the relationship between hearing and vocal function is reawakened. Sometimes remarkable changes occur in only a few sessions. The founders of the method developed a pedagogy that skillfully facilitates this process, helping students reconnect with their voices in a natural and instinctive way.

Because every voice is unique, there is no single exercise or formula that works for everyone. Lichtenberger® Method teachers are trained to listen attentively and to recognize the specific support each individual voice requires. Rather than imposing an ideal sound, the work seeks to create the conditions in which healthy vocal function can emerge naturally.

Singing is no longer something reserved for the gifted or the few. The joy of singing belongs to everyone. The Lichtenberger® Method exists to make that joy available to anyone who feels called to explore the possibilities of their voice.

What sets the Lichtenberger® Method apart?

This method is sound-oriented and not body-oriented. The method focuses on using sound itself as a tool for improvement, rather than relying on traditional manipulation techniques. It emphasizes raising awareness and stimulating the senses rather than following predetermined and mechanical vocal exercises.

The Lichtenberger® Method employs several unique approaches:

1. Stimuli-based learning: Simple and precise stimuli are used to help students discover new pathways to connect with their voice.

2. Non-corrective guidance: Instead of telling students to correct tensions, teachers guide them to feel and investigate the tension through sound.

3. Question-based pedagogy: Teachers use targeted questions and sensory stimulations to help students develop their individual physical perception of sound.

4. Self-discovery: Students are encouraged to verbalize their process, allowing for conscious integration of new information.

Does this method help with vocal dysfunctions?

The Lichtenberger® Method can be applied to various types of singing and speaking voices. It's particularly noted for its potential to help heal vocal dysfunctions and injuries. By focusing on the body's natural physiological functioning and reducing pressure in sound production, this method aims to develop a rich, self-sustaining sound with great flexibility and assurance in music-making or speaking.

Many vocal therapies rely on isolated exercises that treat the voice as a mechanical organ to be trained. However, these approaches often overlook how the voice is responding in the moment: What is happening to the vocal function? How is it adapting? How does the experience of singing change? Without attention to immediate feedback, the work becomes similar to physical therapy—something expected to yield results only over time, without real-time integration.

The Lichtenberger® Method takes a different approach. It does not depend on repetitive exercises but instead uses carefully selected acoustic stimuli designed to repattern the vocal function and guide it toward its natural, optimal use. Everything we do in this method is functional—each stimulus has a direct, practical application, and we continuously observe its immediate effect on the voice. The process is experiential rather than mechanical.

As a result, you do not become dependent on exercises or techniques. The vocal function is gradually reorganized from within, allowing it to operate as it is meant to. Over time, inefficient patterns are naturally replaced by healthy ones, so there is no need to consciously think about how to sing or speak—the voice simply knows.
